Instagram‘s highly anticipated video editing app Edits is officially here and available to download on iOS and Android. โ๏ธ
At launch, Edits offers a mix of organizational tools and creative features grouped into three main areas:
๐ Ideas: A place for creators to jot down video concepts or add notes to saved Reels.
๐ง Inspiration: Browse trending Reels, remix audio, and save it for later.
๐ Projects: Manage and organize multiple video projects in one hub.
There’s also a built-in camera that lets creators film up to 10 minutes of content.
You can publish directly to Instagram, Facebook, and other platforms without watermarks and with improved video quality.
When publishing to Meta platforms, creators also get built-in insights. This might actually be one of the most valuable features, since it provides detailed analytics for existing Reels, offering more granular data like Skip Rate, Like Rate, Share Rate, Comment Rate, Save Rate, and more. These metrics arenโt currently available directly within Instagram.
Instagram also has several features in development, like:
๐ฎ Modify: Use AI to transform the style or vibe of your videos.
๐ค Collaboration: Share drafts with creators, friends, or brand partners for feedback.
Why It Matters:
Instagram is launching Edits at a pivotal time, especially with ongoing uncertainty around ByteDance apps like TikTok and CapCut in the US.
Creators have also been less receptive to CapCut’s increased pricing and paywalls for previously free features.
Instagram is looking to differentiate Edits by focusing on individual, mobile-first creators rather than team or enterprise use cases, which CapCut and other video editing apps have been expanding into more recently.
The launch of Edits is also part of a broader trend where social platforms are continuing to lean into standalone apps (Meta with Threads, ByteDance with Lemon8, Pinterest with Shuffles, etc) that help with bigger initiatives.
Edits gives Instagram a sandbox to test features without overcrowding the main app, which has faced challenges with its native editing tools.
Plus, with Adam Mosseri revealing that some features (likely AI) will be paywalled, Edits could provide Meta with another revenue stream beyond ads.
Whether Edits lives up to the hype or not, more options for creators are always a win.
Excited to play around with Edits this week! Has anyone else downloaded it yet?
